Getting Started
Besides guns, there are
several things you will need to get started. If you don't have everything
at first - that's OK! Just Come on out and join the fun!! A great
place to start is the Single Action Shooting
Society (SASS) website.

Ammo - Revolver and (main match) rifle ammunition may not be jacketed, semi-jacketed, plated, gas checked, or copper washed. It must be all lead. Molydisulfide coated bullets or equivalent are acceptable
Revolver ammunition must have a muzzle velocity less than 1,000 fps. Rifle ammunition must have a muzzle velocity less than 1,400 fps
You will need approximately 50 revolver rounds, 50 rifle rounds, and 50 shotgun shells for each match.
Costume - Cowboy Action ShootingTM is a combination of historical reenactment and Saturday morning at the matinee. Participants may choose the style of costume they wish to wear, but all clothing must be typical of the late 19th century, a B-western movie, or Western television series. SASS puts a great deal of emphasis on costuming because it adds so much to the uniqueness of our game and helps create a festive, informal atmosphere that supports the friendly, fraternal feeling we encourage in our competitors.
Alias - One of the unique aspects of CAS is the requirement for all competitors to select an alias. This name will be used during all competitions. SASS is approaching 80,000 members so you will have to be creative in selecting a name as duplicates are not allowed. Your best bet is to call the SASS office to see if the name you want is available. Have several choices when you call. The SASS office number is (714) 694-1800. Safety Equipment - All shooters and spectators must have safety glasses and hearing protection. Several vendors offer period looking glasses and most competitors use ear plugs of some kind. Wrap around sun glasses are discouraged as they detract from the period look.
Carrying your Guns - Western style leather holsters are required for all revolvers. Many companies offer these for sale. Plastic, nylon, Cordura, etc is not allowed. You may also wish to make or buy a cart or wagon to move your rifles, ammunition, etc from stage to stage.
